  • 1194, Saint Clare of Assisi, Italian follower of Francis of Assisi, daughter of a Count, founder of the Order of " Poor Clares". A well known Poor Clare Nun is Mother Angelica, founder of ETWN.
  • 1611, Archduchess Cecilia Renata of Austria, Queen of Poland
  • 1723, Joshua Reynolds, English painter who painted approximately 3000 portraits until he went blind in one eye and was forced to retire.
  • 1731, Samuel Huntington, Signer of Declaration of Independence and president of the Continental Congress. Although the document was approved on 4th July some believe it was actually signed on August 2nd 1776.
  • 1907, Barbara Stanwyck, American actress who appeared opposite Ronald Reagan in "Cattle Queen of Montana" and inmany other films.
  • 1911, Ginger Rogers, American actress and dancer (d. 1995) who partnered with Fred Astaire in many classic black and white films such as "Flying Down to Rio" and "Top Hat"
  • 1941, Desmond Dekker, Jamaican musician (d. 2006) whose notable hits include "You can get it if you really want it" and "The Israelites".
  • 1942 – Margaret Court, Australian tennis player and television Christian evangelist
  • 1971 – Corey Feldman, American actor

  • 1546, Anne Askew, English Protestant (burned at the stake) (b. 1521)
  • 1557, Anne of Cleves, fourth wife of Henry VIII of England (b. 1515). The marriage wasn't consummated and was annulled. She wasn't "his type". She had a very generous settlement that included Hever Castle and Richmond Palace.
  • 1871, Tad Lincoln, son of U.S. president Abraham Lincoln
  • 1882, Mary Todd Lincoln, First Lady of the United States (b. 1818)
  • 1969, Saturn V rocket lifted the Apollo 11 rocket into orbit on its 280,000 mile journey to the moon, piloted by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.
  • 1991,Frank Rizzo, American politician (b. 1920)
  • 1999 , John F. Kennedy, Jr., American publisher and son of President John F Kennedy. He died in a plane crash along with his wife and sister in law.
  • 2006, Winthrop Paul Rockefeller, Lieutenant Governor of Arkansas (b. 1948)

  • 622, The beginning of the Islamic calendar. During this year the prophet Mohammad left Mecca and went to Medina.
  • 1054, Three Roman legates broke relations between the Western and Eastern Christian churches by placing a Papal Bull of Excommunication on the altar of the Hagia Sophia church in Constantinople (Istanbul)
  • 1661,The first banknotes in Europe are issued by Stockholms Banco.
  • 1880, Dr. Emily Stowe becomes the first woman licensed to practice medicine in Canada.
  • 1935, The world's first parking meter is installed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  • 1945, Manhattan Project: The United States successfully detonates a plutonium-based test nuclear weapon near Alamogordo, New Mexico.
  • 1965, The Mont Blanc Tunnel linking France and Italy opens
  • 1994, Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collides with Jupiter. Impacts continue until July 22nd.
