Historical Events that Took Place on 6th May

  • In 1536, Henry VIII, following his expulsion of Catholicism from England and Wales, decrees that Latin Bibles be replaced by English translations of the Bible in every church.
  • 1682 King Louis XIV moves his court to his new palace at Versailles.
  • In 1840 the Penny Black, the first postage stamp, was released for sale.
  • 1899 The Eiffel Tower in Paris was first opened to the public.
  • 1861, in the American Civil War Akansas secedes from the Union and Richmond Virginia is declared the new capital of the Confederate States of America
  • 1910 George Vth becomes monarch of Great Britain on the death of his father Edward VII. He was later succeeded by Edward VIII who abdicated the throne to marry Mrs Simpson.
  • 1937 The largest dirigible ever built, The Hindenburg, pride of the German Nazi government, burst into flames when it came to land in Lakehurst, New Jersey.
  • In 1954 Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile record by running the mile in 39.4 seconds.
  • 1960 Princess Margaret - sister to Queen Elizabeth II - married Lord Snowdon, society photographer.
  • 1994, The Channel Tunnel, linking England and France by rail under the English Channel is opened jointly by French President Francois Mitterrand and Queen Elizabeth II
  • In 2002 Pym Fortuyn, controversial politician, shot dead during the Netherlands General Election
