- In 1536, Henry VIII, following his expulsion of Catholicism from England and Wales, decrees that Latin Bibles be replaced by English translations of the Bible in every church.
- 1682 King Louis XIV moves his court to his new palace at Versailles.
- In 1840 the Penny Black, the first postage stamp, was released for sale.
- 1899 The Eiffel Tower in Paris was first opened to the public.
- 1861, in the American Civil War Akansas secedes from the Union and Richmond Virginia is declared the new capital of the Confederate States of America
- 1910 George Vth becomes monarch of Great Britain on the death of his father Edward VII. He was later succeeded by Edward VIII who abdicated the throne to marry Mrs Simpson.
