- Adam Opel, founder of the German Opel car factory was born in 1837. He started out making sewing machines and then moved on to manufacturing bicycles. His sons carried the business forward eventually manufacturing cars.
- Gopal Krishna Gokhale, the leader of the Indian Independence Movement was born in 1866. English educated he became president of the Indian National Congress and mentored both Mahatma Ghandi - the leader of the Indian independence movement and Mohammad Ali Jinna - who became leader of the newly formed nation of Pakistan.
- Howard Carter, archaologist, was born in 1874. He is famous for having discovered the tomb of Pharoah Tutankhamun for his patron Lord Carnarvon in 1922.
- Don Messer, Canadian country musician, was born in 1909. His Don Messer's Jubilee Show was at one time the second most highly viewed television show in Canada.
- Joan Sims a graduate of RADA who is famous for her appearances in the Carry On series of films, was born in 1930.

- The Battle of Meggidio, between Egyptian Pharoah Tuthmoses III and a coalition of Canaanite kings took place in 1457 BC. It is recorded in some detail on the walls of the Temple of Amun at Karnak.
- Lincoln Cathedral was dedicated in 1092
- Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show opened in London in 1887 as part of the celebration of Queen Victoria's Jubilee Year. Bill Cody was born in Iowa. He served in the American Civil War and then the Plains War and made his name through his Wild West Shows.
- Italy formally annexed Ethiopia in 1936, after capturing its capital Addis Ababa four days earlier.
- Again in World War II, the Channel Islands were liberated by the British in 1945
- The FDA gave approval for the world's first oral contraceptive pill, Envoid, in 1960. The manufacturer Searle & Co later went on to invent Aspartame which they market as NutraSweet.
- On this day in 1974 a Judicial Committee of the House of Representatives formally opened impeachment proceedings against Richard Nixon following the Watergate Scandal. During the investigation by the FBI and the Senate Watergate Committee it was discovered that the Nixon administration and Richard Nixon in person, had obstructed justice and committed fraud, criminal acts, wire tapping and espionage. As impeachment and criminal proceedings became inevitable, Nixon resigned becoming the only president to resign.
- Aldo Moro, 5 times Italian Prime Minister was murdered by the Red Brigade in 1978
- New Australian Parliament building opened in Canberra in 1988.

- Tenzing Norgay, Nepalese sherpa who accompanied Sir Edmund Hilliary on the first ascent of Everest died in 1986. He received the George Medal from Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
- James Chadwick, English physicist and Nobel Laureate who discovered the neutron and went on to join the Manhattan Project which was responsible for creating the atomic bombs which were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
- Marco Ferreri, Italian film director, screenwriter and actor died in 1987.
